He will talk about the reasons behind why the photographs were taken the way they were and provide some insight into what photographers have to keep in mind in order to take the most effective photo for the story they want to tell.

Dr. David Shim

In his tour, David Shim will speak about the meeting points between politics and visual culture. He discusses the visual dimension of world politics and the political dimension of the visual by specifically focusing on social and environmental justice in World Press Photo's visual narratives in his talk.

We bring the exhibition to life by looking behind the pictures and stories. How do images arise, how do they connect themes they represent and what is the bigger picture? Numerous experts are flown in to give you that bit of extra context. Try a tour, lecture or a full night and more, more, more!

Tickets Visual Academy

This year we offer the Academy programme in both English and Dutch. Booking can be done online or at the door during the festival. Tickets start from €12.50 or €7.50 with a student or stadjerspas discount. When you are inside you can remain until closing time, so by all means stick around after your tour or event.

Dr Dana Mustata

Dr. Dana Mustata is currently with the University of Groningen, teaching Media Studies. She is a researcher, author and assistant professor working at the University of Groningen, with expertise in journalism, television and visual media.

Dr David Shim

Dr. David Shim works as a researcher and assistant professor at the University of Groningen. He specializes in the fields of International Relations, Visual Studies and East Asian Studies. In his research he focuses on the intersections between visual culture and politics.

Dennis Lapré

Dennis Lapré is a real veteran in the business of photography. He has done interesting documentary projects on the aftermath of the war in Srebrenica and loves working with meticulous photo techniques. He is an experienced teacher with the Noorderpoort and Alfa College in Groningen, among others.
